Gary was an employee and later the president and owner of a successful civil contracting company from 1989 until 2014, when he sold the business to its employees. Over 25 years, Gary managed various heavy civil projects, including rehabilitating dams, spillways, tunnels, water and wastewater treatment plants, fish hatcheries, and pipelines. He oversaw multiple large gate rehabilitation projects for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, encompassing slide gates, ring follower gates, radial gates, and floating drum-style gates. Many of these projects were in remote areas with limited access via canyons, rivers, and rugged terrain. Heavy civil projects in the Rocky Mountains required addressing the added challenges of unpredictable weather patterns and working at elevations of up to 10,000 feet.
In 2014, Gary founded Keo Civil LLC to offer consulting services to design firms, government agencies, irrigation districts, and private landowners as they plan projects to construct or repair dams, spillways, gates, valves, and hydroelectric facilities. Gary particularly enjoys the early brainstorming of project concepts for initiatives with demanding access and other unusual conditions. His constructability reviews, problem-solving, and cost-saving suggestions have contributed to the success and safety of many projects.
